Vision problems and eye diseases

Choose a topic and we will explain it calmly: what it is, how you notice it and what you can do.

The first step

Your eye test, to see well and keep an eye on your eyes

At LUPER the eye test is personalised, takes 30 minutes and is free (worth €49). This is what we check:

  • Medical historyYour health and eye history, and your family's.
  • Visual acuity and prescriptionHow well you see far away and up close, eye by eye.
  • Back of the eyeWe check the condition of the retina and the optic nerve.
  • Extra tests if neededVisual field, focusing and eye coordination.

LUPER is an optician's, not a medical service. If in the eye test we see anything beyond your prescription, we explain it to you and recommend that you see an ophthalmologist, who is the one who diagnoses and treats eye diseases.

Why get checked

Many vision problems can be prevented or treated

That is what the World Health Organization (WHO) says in its report on blindness and visual impairment.

2.2 billion

people around the world have some kind of vision problem, near or far.

1 billion

of those cases, at least, could have been prevented or have not yet been treated.

The most common causes of poor distance vision are cataracts and uncorrected prescriptions, followed by macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. For near vision, the most common cause is presbyopia. (WHO, 2026)

Tips

How to look after your eye health

Small habits and timely check-ups make the difference.

Habits that help

  • Wear sunglasses with a UV filter when you are outdoors, and a cap or hat with a brim.
  • Do not smoke: tobacco increases the risk of cataracts.
  • Eat fruit and vegetables every day.
  • If you have diabetes, keep it under control.
  • Protect your eyes in jobs or sports where there is a risk of knocks.
  • If you wear contact lenses, follow their cleaning routine and wearing times to the letter.

Timely check-ups

  • Children: have their eyes checked even if they do not complain about their vision.
  • Adults: one full eye examination between the ages of 20 and 29 and two between 30 and 39; after that, as often as you are told.
  • From 60, or if you have relatives with glaucoma: a check-up with the ophthalmologist every 1 or 2 years.
  • With diabetes: an eye check-up every 1 or 2 years, or as your doctor advises.

When not to wait. If you have severe eye pain, suddenly lose vision, see flashes or lots of new floaters, or lose part of your field of vision, go to A&E or to an ophthalmologist without waiting. If straight lines start to look wavy, book an appointment with an ophthalmologist soon.

Frequently asked questions about eye health

What is eye health?

It is the good condition of your eyes and your vision. Looking after it means correcting your prescription properly, protecting your eyes from the sun and from knocks, having healthy habits and getting checked in good time to detect problems that cause no symptoms at first, such as glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy.

How often should I have my eyes checked?

Children, even if they do not complain. Adults, with a full eye examination once between the ages of 20 and 29 and twice between 30 and 39, and after that as often as you are told. If you are over 60, or have relatives with glaucoma, or have diabetes, a check-up every 1 or 2 years is recommended. And whenever you notice changes in your vision.

What is the difference between an optometrist and an ophthalmologist?

The optometrist tests your eyes, works out your prescription, fits glasses and contact lenses and can detect warning signs in the eye test. The ophthalmologist is the specialist doctor: they diagnose and treat eye diseases and are the ones who operate. At LUPER, if we see anything beyond your prescription, we recommend that you see an ophthalmologist.

What are the most common eye diseases?

According to the WHO, the most common causes of poor distance vision are cataracts and uncorrected prescriptions, followed by age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. For near vision, the most common is presbyopia or ageing eyes.

Does the eye test detect glaucoma or cataracts?

In the eye test we check your prescription, the back of the eye and the optic nerve, and we can see signs that suggest a problem. The diagnosis is always made by the ophthalmologist, with their own tests. If we see anything, we recommend that you see one.

How much does the eye test cost at LUPER?

It is free. It is worth €49, takes 30 minutes and we do it at the 3 LUPER opticians in Murcia and San Pedro del Pinatar. We recommend that you book an appointment and arrive 10 minutes early.

What is low vision and how can you help me?

It is a loss of vision that cannot be fully corrected with glasses, contact lenses or surgery. At LUPER we advise you on optical aids so you can carry out your daily tasks better.

How do I protect my eyes from the sun?

With sunglasses that filter UV rays and a cap or hat with a brim when you are outdoors. Prolonged exposure to the sun is one of the risk factors for cataracts.

Eye health: everything you need to know to look after your eyes

What is eye health?

Eye health is the wellbeing of your eyes and the ability to see clearly. Keeping good eye health means preventing and detecting early problems such as eye strain, refractive errors, eye diseases or age-related deterioration of vision. The keys are regular eye check-ups, protecting your eyes from the sun, eating a balanced diet and not smoking.

Personalised eye test: the key to detecting vision problems

The LUPER personalised eye test measures your prescription and checks the back of the eye and the optic nerve. It detects short-sightedness, long-sightedness, astigmatism or presbyopia, and it can show warning signs of diseases such as glaucoma or macular degeneration; in that case we recommend that you see an ophthalmologist, who is the one who diagnoses and treats them. It takes 30 minutes, is worth €49 and is free.

Common eye diseases

Glaucoma damages the optic nerve and usually causes no symptoms at first, which is why check-ups are important. Cataracts are a clouding of the lens of the eye, common with age, that makes vision hazy. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affects the macula, the centre of the retina, and central vision. Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that damages the vessels of the retina. Dry eye appears when the eye cannot keep a good layer of tears.

Vision therapy

Vision therapy is a programme of personalised, supervised visual exercises to improve focusing and eye coordination, in children and adults.

Ocular prostheses

When an eye is lost through injury or illness, a made-to-measure ocular prosthesis helps to restore the symmetry of the face. At LUPER Canalejas we see you and explain every step.

Low vision

Low vision is a loss of vision that cannot be fully corrected with ordinary glasses or contact lenses and makes it difficult to read, drive or recognise faces. At LUPER we advise you on optical aids to improve your quality of life.

Hoy he estado y me ha atendido Jaime.
