Types
Types of ocular prostheses
The right one depends on the condition of each person's eye and socket.
Custom-made ocular prosthesis
For people without an eyeball, after an enucleation or an evisceration. It is custom-made and its thickness is adjusted to the size of the socket.
Scleral shell
For when the eye is still present but has shrunk. It is thinner and more comfortable, and is recommended when a contact lens is not suitable.
Conformer
A temporary piece, white or clear, placed after surgery to shape the socket while waiting for the definitive prosthesis. It helps prevent infections and deformities.

What the process is like
Several appointments, with no rush, until the prosthesis is comfortable and natural.
Ophthalmological assessment
The ophthalmologist assesses the socket and decides on the technique and type of prosthesis. Inflammation, scarring or infections all play a part.
Surgery, if needed
Enucleation (the eyeball is removed) or evisceration (its contents are removed). It is carried out by the ophthalmic surgeon in hospital.
Mould of the socket
A mould is taken to create a prosthesis that is unique to you.
Hand-painted design
The piece is fitted and painted by hand: iris colour, veins and details, so that it looks like your other eye.
Fitting and adjustments
The definitive prosthesis is fitted and adjusted over several sessions to gain comfort and movement.
How long does it take? We don't give a fixed time frame because every case is different. Your ophthalmologist decides when to start, depending on how the socket heals; after that we take the measurements, do the trials and make the adjustments you need, and we explain each step as we go.

At LUPER we work with prescriptions from the Murcia Health Service (Servicio Murciano de Salud, SMS) and with the amount set in its catalogue.

It is prescribed by the SMS ophthalmology departments and can be renewed every 24 months.
Is it covered by the Seguridad Social?
Yes, with a prescription. The custom-made ocular prosthesis and the custom-made scleral shell are included in the Murcia Health Service's orthoprosthetic benefits catalogue for cases of trauma, illness or congenital malformation, and they are prescribed by the SMS ophthalmology departments. Does an ocular prosthesis restore vision?
No. An ocular prosthesis does not allow you to see. Its function is aesthetic and to protect the socket.
Does it move like a natural eye?
It can move somewhat in step with the healthy eye, especially when the implant is attached to the eye muscles. Even so, its movement is more limited than that of a natural eye.
Do I have to take it out every night?
No. You can sleep with it in. It is taken out from time to time to clean it, following the guidance of your ophthalmologist or specialist.
Can I play sport with an ocular prosthesis?
Yes. For contact sports or swimming, wearing protective glasses or goggles is recommended.
How long does it take to get used to it?
It depends on each person and on the adjustments needed. We don't give a fixed time frame: we explain each step as we go.
How often does it need replacing?
It depends on wear and on changes in the socket and the face. Having it checked and polished at least once a year helps extend its life; your specialist will tell you when it's time to renew it.

Procedure for fitting an ocular prosthesis
It starts with an ophthalmological assessment of the socket. If surgery is needed, it may be an enucleation (removal of the whole eyeball) or an evisceration (removal of the contents of the eye); during surgery, the implant is attached to the eye muscles to allow some movement. A mould of the socket is then taken and the prosthesis is fitted and painted by hand, recreating the colour and the veins. Finally, the definitive prosthesis is fitted and adjusted over several sessions.
Care and maintenance
To clean the prosthesis, use contact lens solution or saline and avoid products containing alcohol. You don't need to remove it every night; follow your specialist's cleaning guidance and have it checked at least once a year. In some cases, the ophthalmologist may recommend removing it for a few days or doing specific cleaning.

Trato humano muy bueno. La calidad de las gafas nefasta, propaganda engañosa en mi caso. Valoraré poner hoja de reclamaciones en consumo ya que la solución que me han dado a mi problema, cristales que se empañan nada más usarlos y montura defectuosa, es comprarme otras y pagar el 50% después de haber pagado por unas gafas, repito, defectuosas, más de 1000 euros.

Muy muy contenta. Me he elegido unas gafas preciosas y además he tenido 20 € de descuento. La chica que me atendió fue súper amable y simpática. ¡Sin duda, muy recomendable!
Me compré dos gafas en mayo, me dijeron que tardaban 3 días y tardaron 3 semanas en dármelas. Cuando me las probé me mareé en la óptica. Me fui a casa y me las puse y tuve un mareo que me duro varias horas, no podía hacer nada ni cuidar de mi hijo. Fui a la óptica y me dijeron que no entendían que pasaba que era super raro. Me hicieron un cambio y me dieron otras gafas. Otra vez esperando una semana. Más de un mes sin gafas. Pues con las gafas nuevas también me mareaba pero menos. Fui y me decían que no entendían que pasaba que era muy raro. Al final me he ido a otra óptica y es que estaban mal graduadas y el centro óptico mal puesto. Me he gastado 180€ en perder el tiempo y dar vueltas y no tener gafas que me valgan.
