Short-sightedness (myopia) is a refractive error: you see well up close, but distant objects look blurry. It happens when the eye is longer than normal or the cornea is very curved, and light focuses in front of the retina instead of on it.
It usually appears in childhood, often between the ages of 8 and 12, it can increase during adolescence and it normally stabilises shortly after 20. Genetics and lifestyle play a part: spending more time outdoors as a child reduces the risk.
It is very common: the American Academy of Ophthalmology estimates that by 2050 almost half of the world's population will be short-sighted.
Road signs, shop signs or the board at school.
To try to focus better on things in the distance.
Eye fatigue from straining your eyes.
To the TV, to books or to screens.

Short-sightedness is detected in an eye test. At LUPER it is personalised, for adults and children, takes 30 minutes and is free (worth €49).
Young children hardly ever complain about blurry vision: have their eyes checked even if they do not notice anything. If in the test we see something more than a prescription, diagnosis and treatment are for the ophthalmologist.

See how it works →Short-sightedness with astigmatism? It is very common to have both. They are corrected at the same time in the same glasses or with toric contact lenses. And if you also find it hard to see up close from 40 onwards, varifocals (progressive lenses) sort it all out in a single pair.
Short-sightedness cannot be reversed, but in children you can try to slow down its progression. The aim is for them to reach adulthood with a lower prescription. These are the options available:
No option works the same for every child, and contact lenses require careful hygiene because of the risk of infection. We explain which one suits your child in the eye test.

We tell you in half a minute.
High myopia (more than 6 dioptres). It increases the risk of retinal detachment, glaucoma and cataracts, so it is a good idea to have your retina checked regularly. If you suddenly see flashes, lots of floaters or lose part of your field of vision, go to the ophthalmologist or A&E without waiting.

It is a refractive error in which near objects look sharp and distant ones blurry. It happens when the eye is longer than normal or the cornea is very curved, and light focuses in front of the retina.
They see clearly up close, but things in the distance look blurry. Depending on the prescription, it can range from slight blurriness to a significant loss of distance vision. That is why many short-sighted people squint to try to focus.
It cannot be reversed. Glasses and contact lenses correct it, and for adults there is refractive surgery, which is assessed by the ophthalmologist. There is no evidence that eye exercises, vitamins or pills prevent or cure short-sightedness.
It is usually detected at school age, often between the ages of 8 and 12. It can increase during adolescence and normally stabilises shortly after 20.
It cannot be reversed, but there are myopia control treatments that try to make it progress more slowly: special contact lenses, orthokeratology or low-dose atropine eye drops (the latter prescribed by the ophthalmologist). Spending more time outdoors also helps. At LUPER we fit myopia control contact lenses and make glasses with Myopis myopia control lenses.
It is high short-sightedness, of more than 6 dioptres. It is associated with a higher risk of retinal detachment, glaucoma and cataracts, so it needs regular retinal check-ups. If you notice flashes, sudden floaters or loss of part of your field of vision, see an ophthalmologist immediately.
Yes, each eye can have a different prescription, and you can even be short-sighted in only one. That is why in the test we measure your prescription eye by eye and your glasses or contact lenses carry the exact correction for each one.
At LUPER, prescription glasses with frame and single vision lenses cost from €49, and you get the 2nd pair 50% off all year round. The final price depends on your prescription and the lens; we tell you in the eye test, which is free.
For adults with a stable prescription there are surgical options such as laser or intraocular lenses, which must always be assessed by the ophthalmologist. At LUPER we put you in touch with the Ophthalmology department of Hospital Quirónsalud Murcia, which assesses and decides on the treatment.
Short-sightedness (myopia) is a refractive error that makes distant objects look blurry while near ones are seen clearly. It happens when the eyeball is longer than normal or the cornea is too curved, and light focuses in front of the retina. It is a multifactorial condition: genetics play a part (if your parents are short-sighted, the risk is higher) and so does the environment, because spending more time outdoors in childhood reduces the risk.
Blurry vision when looking into the distance, squinting to see better, eye strain and headaches. In children, sitting very close to the television, getting very close to books or not seeing the board well. If you notice them, book your eye test at LUPER.
Simple myopia is the most common, it usually stays below 6 dioptres and is corrected with glasses or contact lenses. Severe myopia or high myopia is over 6 dioptres and is associated with a higher risk of retinal detachment, glaucoma and cataracts, so it requires regular retinal check-ups.
Glasses for short-sightedness are the most common way to correct it. Depending on your prescription, they can be made with thinner lenses and with anti-reflective coating, so that they are comfortable and look good. At LUPER you have prescription glasses from €49, with frame and single vision lenses, and the 2nd pair 50% off.
If you prefer not to wear glasses, contact lenses correct short-sightedness, including short-sightedness with astigmatism (toric contact lenses). If you also have presbyopia, there are multifocal contact lenses.
Short-sightedness can come together with astigmatism or presbyopia. They are not the same: with short-sightedness you see badly in the distance; with astigmatism your vision is distorted by an irregular curvature of the cornea. Both are corrected at the same time with the same glasses or with toric contact lenses.
Myopia control aims to slow down its progression in children and teenagers to reduce the risk of complications in the future. There are peripheral defocus contact lenses, orthokeratology, low-dose atropine eye drops (prescribed by the ophthalmologist) and habits such as spending more time outdoors. At LUPER we fit myopia control contact lenses, make glasses with Myopis lenses and explain the options to you in the eye test.
If your distance vision is blurry, you squint or you get frequent headaches. We recommend regular check-ups, especially for children and teenagers, because short-sightedness usually appears at an early age. If you want surgery for short-sightedness, we put you in touch with the Ophthalmology department of Hospital Quirónsalud Murcia.

Me he elegido unas gafas preciosas y además he tenido 20 € de descuento.
Hoy he estado y me ha atendido Jaime.
