What is low vision?
Low vision is a significant loss of sight that cannot be fully corrected with glasses, contact lenses, medication or surgery, and that makes everyday life difficult.
It is not total blindness: the person keeps part of their vision, although it is limited. The aim is to make the most of the sight you have with visual aids and small changes at home.
- ReadingThe newspaper, your phone, prices or small print.
- Recognising facesKnowing who is saying hello to you in the street.
- Watching TV or using the computerClearly and without getting so close to the screen.
- Going for a walk without being dazzledTelling colours, kerbs and steps apart.
Types of low vision
It depends on the disease that causes it. These are the most common:
Central low vision
Vision in the centre is lost. Reading and recognising faces is hard, even though you can see to the sides.
Peripheral low vision
Side vision is lost, the so-called “tunnel vision”. It is hard to see what is coming from the sides and to get around in the street.
Night blindness
You see very little in low light: at dusk, in dark indoor spaces or at the cinema.
Blurred or hazy vision
You can see the whole visual field, but objects and details look blurry or as if in a fog.
How does a person with low vision see?
Every case is unique. Some of the most common difficulties:
- Narrow visual fieldYou only see part of what is around you.
- “Patchy” visionSpots or areas where you cannot see.
- GlareLight is very bothersome and it is hard to see in sunlight or under bright lights.
- Poor contrastIt is hard to tell an object apart from the background, such as a step or a glass.
- Blurred or distorted visionDetails look poorly defined or misshapen.
- Poor vision in low lightAt dusk or in poorly lit places.
Causes of low vision
It is usually the result of an eye disease or injury. The most common are:
Macular degeneration (AMD)
It affects the macula, the area of the retina we use to see detail, and damages central vision. Find out more
Glaucoma
It damages the optic nerve and usually starts with peripheral vision. Find out more
Diabetic retinopathy
Diabetes can damage the retina and affect any area of vision. Find out more
Cataracts
The lens becomes cloudy and vision becomes misty. Find out more
Retinitis pigmentosa
A genetic disease of the retina; the first thing to go is usually night vision, and then side vision.
High short-sightedness (high myopia) and other causes
Very high short-sightedness, injuries to the eye or brain and some genetic disorders. Find out more about short-sightedness
It is more common in older people because many of these diseases are too, but age alone does not cause low vision.
The diagnosis is made by the ophthalmologist
Low vision is diagnosed by the ophthalmologist, who measures your visual acuity up close and far away, looks at your visual field (central and side vision) and examines the back of the eye with the pupils dilated to find the cause. At LUPER we do not diagnose or treat eye diseases: we start from that diagnosis to find the aids that work best for you. If you notice a sudden loss of vision, see an ophthalmologist or go to A&E.
Aids for low vision
Low vision is usually permanent, but there are aids that can make it easier for you to read, get around and go about your day.
Optical aids
- High-power magnifiers for reading and close-up tasks.
- Glasses with special magnification, telescopic and microscopic lenses to see details far away or up close.
- Filters: tinted lenses that improve contrast and reduce glare.
Non-optical aids
- More light: lamps and desk lamps that light up what you are doing well.
- Reading stands and holders so you can read in a comfortable position.
- Adapted items: phones and watches designed for low vision.
Electronic aids
- Electronic magnifiers: they enlarge the image on a screen.
- Reading and recognition devices that read text aloud or recognise objects and faces.
- Your own phone: more contrast, large text and read-aloud.
Before buying a magnifier or an aid on your own, try it out: no single aid works for everything, and each one has its own distance and way of being used.
How we help you with low vision
Advice and fitting of visual aids to help you gain independence in your daily life.
You tell us what you find hard
Reading, watching TV, sewing, recognising faces, going out… The things you want to do again.
We start from your diagnosis
Bring your ophthalmologist's reports: they tell us what vision you still have and what needs protecting.
We try out aids
Magnifiers, filters, glasses with magnification or electronic aids, depending on what you need.
We teach you how to use them
Distance, light and posture matter as much as the aid itself.
Follow-up
If your vision changes, we review and adjust the aids.
What you can do with low vision, and a real case
The low vision consultation is available at our 3 opticians and costs €49. In it we try selective filters to see which one suits you best.

María, optician specialising in low vision
María is an optician and hearing aid specialist at LUPER San Pedro del Pinatar and specialises in low vision. She listens to you calmly, tries out the aids with you and explains how to get the most out of them at home.
How to adapt to low vision
With some aids and simple changes it is possible to keep an active and independent life.
Get your home ready
More light where you read and cook, clear obstacles out of the way and use contrasting colours: a coloured edge on the steps, a dark plate on a light tablecloth.
Make the most of your phone
Turn up the contrast and the text size, and switch on read-aloud.
Look for support
Adapting to losing your sight is also an emotional challenge. Lean on your family and on support groups, and ask your ophthalmologist about vision rehabilitation.
Tell us about your case
Book an appointment or message us and we will explain the next steps. If you can, bring your ophthalmologist's reports.
Arrive 10 minutes early for your appointment. Better with an appointment: our diary is very full and without one we can't guarantee we'll be able to see you.
Frequently asked questions about low vision
What is the difference between low vision and blindness?
With low vision you keep part of your sight, although it is not enough for everyday life and cannot be fully corrected with glasses. In Spain, to become a member, the ONCE (Spanish National Organisation of the Blind) requires that, in both eyes, visual acuity is 0.1 or less with the best possible correction or that the visual field is reduced to 10 degrees or less.
Can low vision be cured?
It is usually permanent: glasses, medication or surgery do not normally cure it, although they can sometimes improve vision a little or stop it getting worse. Ask your ophthalmologist about your case. Visual aids are not a cure, but they can make everyday life easier for you.
What aids are there for low vision?
High-power magnifiers, glasses with special magnification, telescopic lenses, filters that improve contrast, electronic magnifiers and devices that read text aloud. Good lighting, reading stands and your phone's accessibility settings also help.
Do ordinary glasses help with low vision?
Glasses correct your prescription, but with low vision they are not enough: that is why they are combined with aids such as magnifiers, glasses with special magnification or filters.
Can I drive if I have low vision?
It depends on your acuity and your visual field. In Spain, the eyesight requirements for driving are set out in the General Drivers' Regulations (Reglamento General de Conductores) and are checked by the driver medical assessment centre (centro de reconocimiento de conductores). Check with your ophthalmologist first.
What are the main causes of low vision?
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and cataracts. Also retinitis pigmentosa, high myopia, eye injuries and some genetic disorders.
Who diagnoses low vision?
The ophthalmologist, with visual acuity and visual field tests and an examination of the back of the eye. At the opticians we start from that diagnosis to find visual aids for you.

Me he elegido unas gafas preciosas y además he tenido 20 € de descuento.
Hoy he estado y me ha atendido Jaime.
